June 8, 2017
You were enjoying girl’s night out with your friends when things took a strange and unexpected turn – you broke a tooth when you took a bite of ceviche and found that the chef missed some of the clam shell. When you work with your dentist in 32207, you find out that the best way to address the compromised structure is with a dental crown. This restorative treatment not only corrects the break, but also looks great and can last for decades with proper care. Learn more about dental crowns in Jacksonville from your trusted oral healthcare professional, Dr. Sol Brotman.
What Are Dental Crowns?
Before we explain how this restorative procedure can benefit and protect your smile, Dr. Brotman likes to define exactly what these are. Dental crowns are tooth-shaped “caps” that fit over your existing teeth – or, they can be used as the crowning glory of a high-quality dental implant. These are usually made of durable porcelain or a combination of porcelain and metal alloys that blends right in with your natural teeth. And, we can also combine crowns to make a dental bridge, replacing several missing dentitions with “pontics,” or artificial teeth to help you reclaim your oral health.
What Problems Do Dental Crowns Address?
Crowns are the optimal course of treatment for many dental situations. They’re used in the following circumstances:
- To hold a broken tooth together
- To repair a tooth that has been worn down significantly
- To protect a weak tooth from breaking
- To support a tooth with a large filling
- To serve as the final part of a dental implant
- To correct discolored or misshapen teeth
- To make cosmetic modifications and aesthetic upgrades
- To cover a tooth after root canal therapy
What Is The Process Of Getting A Dental Crown?
Having a dental crown placed is a two-step process:
- Step One – At the initial visit, Dr. Brotman will perform a thorough examination and possibly take diagnostic x-rays to ensure proper placement of your crown. Then, he’ll numb the area and shape your tooth to prepare it to have the restoration placed on top of it. At that point, our team will take impressions and send them to a lab that will create your custom crown. As the last step of your first visit, we’ll then we will affix a temporary crown that you can use in the meantime.
- Step Two – Once the lab completes your individualized crown, you’ll come back for a second appointment to receive your long-term solution. We will remove the temporary crown and cement the permanent crown in place. At that point, you’ll be done – and you can proudly start enjoying your restored pearly whites.
Can I Afford A Dental Crown?
Absolutely! Our goal is to make quality dental care available for every patient. Most dental insurance plans offer coverage for dental crowns, and we’re in-network providers with Delta Dental, Aetna, Humana, and BlueCross BlueShield. We’re always happy to submit claims – regardless of what provider you use – to help you get the most out of your benefits.
