Frequently Asked Questions
Get the Answers You Need to Relieve Pain
Is there a difference in management if my jaw pain is recent compared to the pain that has been present for many years?
Yes. Chronic pain is an important consideration in managing long term pain complaints. Dr. Brotman is experienced in treating both acute jaw pain and chronic facial pain. Often, patients have seen several other dentists and physicians before they are referred or self-refer to our dental office.
What should I do if TM Joint surgery has been recommended for my jaw problem?
Surgery is seldom performed at this time, even by the most accomplished and respected surgeons. If surgery has been recommended, we suggest a second opinion by an experienced non-surgeon to determine if other management options are available for you.
Should teeth be crowned or bites adjusted to treat jaw problems or facial pain?
There are very rare, specific reasons for which adjusting bites or performing restorative dentistry would be indicated. Reversible management is the gold standard in facial pain therapy.
Which narcotics are best for chronic jaw pain?
While many different medications can be therapeutic for different jaw problems, narcotics are seldom part of the management protocol. In those cases when narcotics are indicated for chronic pain, we work with the proper medical specialist to ensure patient safety.
Is Facial Pain or TMD management covered under my insurance?
Facial pain and TMD management are covered under medical insurance but not dental insurance.
Is Dr. Brotman a participating provider in my medical insurance?
Medical insurance typically only uses oral surgeons as their only dentist par providers, therefore they have no in-plan providers for diagnostic and non surgical facial pain and TMD management. Many oral surgeons in Jacksonville refer their non surgical TMD and diagnostic management to Dr. Brotman.
How will I know how much each visit will cost?
We will tell you the expected procedures and the cost of each visit when you make that appointment. We will generate and submit the insurance claim to your medical carrier along with all necessary supporting documentation.
What if I need referrals for additional diagnostic tests or treatment?
If your medical plan is a PPO, Dr. Brotman will make a referral to a par provider, if available and appropriate. If your medical plan is an HMO, Dr. Brotman will work will your primary care physician to expedite all referrals.
